Dry January can be a perfect way to give your body and liver a break from the festivities of the holiday season. People abstain from alcohol in January for a variety of reasons, including fundraisers and awareness campaigns or New Year resolutions. Regardless of the “whys” behind the decision to be sober, you’re going to want to check out this list of curated mocktails, spritzers and hot beverage recipes to get you through the dark and cold month of January.
If you feel like your drinking is not under your control or would like to talk to someone about it, I encourage you to reach out to local support systems in your community. There are many different options for the sober-curious, from alcohol abstinence programs or drinking mindfulness programs, to crisis help lines, counseling or group meetings. If there are not in-person supports in your community, there are online programs and websites that can be beneficial in your journey.

Rose Cardamom Tea Latte
This rose cardamom tea latte is equal parts sweet, warmly spiced, and floral. Easily customizable to be dairy-free, sugar-free or caffeine-free, this latte is sure to get you through the chill of January.
Grapefruit Soda
I am obsessed with this grapefruit syrup from Vancouver based food blogger Tiffy Cooks. I crave citrus in the dark of winter. Simply mix this syrup with sparkling water and ice to create a refreshing grapefruit spritzer. This links to an alcoholic cocktail recipe; however, her post also mentions a non-alcoholic option of stirring it into hot water.
Bone Broth
Hot, savoury bone broth is a sure way to soothe your soul during the cold months. I’m not one to tout health benefits, and so I will leave you to form your own conclusions about the benefits of drinking bone broth. However, I will say it is such a warm and comforting hot drink when you’re feeling tea-ed and coffee-ed out.
I love this recipe for a slow cooker bone broth from the Magical Slow Cooker. When I look for bone broth recipes, I always look for the addition of an acid (to help pull nutrients from the bones) and a recipe where the bones are roasted in the oven before simmering to get a more robust flavor.
Rosemary Pear Mocktail
Like Jasmin, writer of this Mash and Spread blog post, I am also not a big drinker. I do love a fancy cocktail-esque beverage though, and these Rosemary Pear Mocktails are gorgeous and tasty!
I have similar whiskey glasses (Amazon link) that I received as a wedding gift. I’m a big believer in proper glassware, and these gold rimmed glasses are perfect for this mocktail.
Dalgona Matcha
I loved the dalgona coffee wave in 2020, so I was excited to see this matcha version come up on my Instagram feed! Not a sponsored shout-out, I just seriously love Soar Organic’s matcha. They sell top-notch, organic matcha, and it’s even better that they are also a British Columbia based company.
Next time you open a can of chickpeas, save that precious aquafaba (the liquid that the chickpeas are canned in). Use it to make this refreshing dalgona matcha.
