Four of our favorite, budget-friendly DIY holiday decorations
You likely don’t even have to go to the store to make these do-it-yourself winter holiday decorations! These affordable and sustainable decorations are perfect for the entire winter season, even withstanding that post-Christmas clarity when all your tinsel and LED snowmen and gold baubles lose their luster.
DIY Popcorn Garland Strands
Every year as a kid we would make popcorn and cranberry garland strands for our tree. My mom would pop a big bowl of popcorn and we would all gather around and string the popcorn into garlands.
Check out our DIY Popcorn Garlands post for a how to on this nostalgic project.
Salt Dough Decorations
We LOVE what Katie over at Good Life Eats has done with a simple salt dough.
If you bake, you likely already have all the ingredients for salt dough. You just need salt, flour and water!
These salt dough tree ornaments are an easy DIY holiday decoration.
Eucalyptus (or other greenery) Holiday Door Decorations
I’m in love with this eucalyptus door swag from West Coast Gardens. If you’re lucky enough to live where eucalyptus grows, this swag is a simple forage project. Fresh eucalyptus can also usually be found at your local flower shop. If not, similar looks can be achieved with cedar, spruce or fir.
Using neutral ribbon and metal embellishments allows your door décor to stay in style throughout the entire winter.
Dehydrated Oranges
This might have been more “budget-friendly” in previous years, as the price of fruit has skyrocketed recently. An orange right now is $2.50 at my local grocery store!
However, if you dehydrate your citrus fruits well, they will keep year over year, getting more life out of them. And at the end of their life, you can compost them. Anything to keep plastic out of the landfills, right?
There are numerous tutorials for how to dehydrate oranges on the internet, but I love this post over at Call Me Cupcake. Her photos are amazing and her instructions are clear and easy to follow.
